Glossary of League Terms
.
ACTION - Implementing League program positions or principles by making public statements, lobby legislators, litigation, monitoring issues, and citizen education. A Call to Action is an alert that an important issue is at the point where action can be most effective. 

ANNUAL MEETING - Locally, a mini convention which must be held each year for the members to elect a board and approve a budget, program, positions and bylaws for the following year.

CALL - Announcement sent annually to the membership listing the annual meeting date, proposed budget, directors, and agenda.

CONCURRENCE - Agreement by League members or League boards with a position reached by another League, a resource committee or a task force.

CONSENSUS - Member agreement reached through study and discussion of an issue. It describes both the process and the result.

CONVENTION - A biennial meeting at which League delegates elect officers, adopt a budget, and choose study and action priorities. Conventions are scheduled at the state and national levels.

COUNCIL - Biennial meeting of LWV delegates scheduled in the years between state and national conventions. Representation is limited and the purpose is to review program and adopt a budget.

OPEN MEETING - Local meetings open to the public scheduled at least four times a year.

PMP - Per Member Payment of dues to state and national leagues.

PORTFOLIO - Description of a board member's responsibilities.

POSITION - The League's point of view on a governmental issue. A position is determined through consensus, concurrence or application of the League's principles.

PROGRAM - See Board and Committees.

STUDY ITEM - A subject chosen for in-depth research and analysis by the membership to be presented for consensus at the conclusion of the study.

UNIT - Membership meetings convened to discuss and study local, state, and national League program.
